People in communities all across the United States are missing school and work because they simply can’t afford basic necessities to manage their periods. Pads, tampons, and menstrual cups are not covered by subsidy programs (like SNAP), and some families are forced to choose other critical purchases or cut back on these items that help maintain health.

At Girls Helping Girls. Period. (GHGP) we believe menstrual health is a matter of basic health and human dignity. We’re a South Orange, NJ-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to education, collection/distribution of products, and advocating for systemic change.

We are a small organization with a big impact. Accomplishments include:

  • Supported more than 1,000 young people in basic period management and menstrual cup workshops

  • Donated more than 5,000,000 menstrual items

  • Advocated for a law that now requires pads and tampons in all NJ public schools with grades 6-12, with costs covered by the state

Job Description: Board Member

Volunteer Position

GHGP is seeking passionate, committed individuals to join its Board of Trustees as we grow our impact. GHGP is at a pivotal moment in its decade of existence. In the past few years, we have grown from an all-volunteer organization focused on product donations to one with a small team of paid staff with an expanded mission of education and systemic change. Members of the Board will support the work of GHGP, provide leadership and governance, and act as ambassadors. Board service is a two-year term.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Mission and Impact

  • Serve as a partner to the Executive Director in developing GHGP’s strategic plan and guiding its implementation.
  • Evaluate GHGP’s impact and outcomes by regularly measuring performance and effectiveness of product distribution and student workshops.
  • Volunteer time and expertise to organizational activities based on professional background, as requested by the Executive Director and Board President.

Governance and Oversight:

  • Meet legal and fiduciary responsibilities to ensure that assets are managed properly and GHGP’s charitable mission is carried out,
  • Approve the annual budget, audit reports, and material business decisions.
  • Review the performance of the Executive Director and make all staffing and compensation decisions for this position.
  • Ensure GHGP’s commitment to a diverse Board and staff through equitable hiring and recruiting policies that reflect the communities GHGP serves.

Development

  • Commit to donate, fundraise, and participate in other development activities at a personally significant level, reflecting GHGP as a main philanthropic priority.
  • Contribute to our annual Board end-of-year campaign by helping raise funds in meaningful and engaging ways, which may include soliciting corporate sponsorships, stewarding significant donors, or reaching out to your personal network.

Participation

  • Regularly attend and participate in Board meetings – currently Board meets eleven times per year, typically virtually (although occasionally in person in Northern NJ).
  • Serve on at least one Board committee (e.g. Steering Committee, Nominating Committee, Fundraising Committee, Advocacy Committee)
  • Play an ongoing role in identifying potential new Board members, supporters, and partners.
  • Represent GHGP to stakeholders and act as an ambassador for the organization.

QUALIFICATIONS

This is an extraordinary opportunity for an individual who is passionate about addressing menstrual inequity. Ideal candidates will demonstrate a commitment to GHGP‘s mission and educate themselves about the communities GHGP serves. Members should have a natural affinity for cultivating relationships and building consensus, and have personal qualities of integrity and a passion for making a difference.

We are seeking a diverse Board and welcome applicants of any personal or professional background. Current priorities include candidates with experience in education and advocacy, especially in government, health education, public policy, public health, and law. The goal is to add members whose lived experiences and identities reflect the communities we serve.

Applicants should reside in NJ or the surrounding area as there are expectations of in-person participation throughout the year.
